Taking Time to Reset

By Toni Grates

For the busy, multitasking mom (and the increasingly busy dad, spouse, single and  everyone else in our fast-paced culture) there never seems to be enough hours in a day.  As a mom who has mastered the art of faxing and folding laundry simultaneously (a real party trick!), I know this from experience.

We eat lunch while working on a presentation, make dinner while answering phone calls, mop floors while testing our kids for their spelling tests – is this healthy?  Is there room in our busy schedule to do nothing?  While it’s often necessary (and seemingly impressive) to be able to do 8 things simultaneously, it’s unhealthy without what I call “reset time.”

By taking a few minutes each day to be in the moment and simplify what we’re doing, we reset ourselves emotionally and physically, therefore increasing our productivity, restoring calm and helping us to feel more balanced once we start up again.  Here are a few things you can do in 10 minutes or less that will help you to find balance in the face of multi-tasking:

* Take a 10 minute walk.  Drop whatever you’re doing and go.  Don’t have a reason.  Don’t have a destination.  Just go.  You’ll find that things look much different once you return to whatever it is you were doing before.

* Close your eyes and breathe.  Inhale through the nose for a count of 3 and then exhale out the nose for 3.  Increase the inhalation to 5, then 7, then 10.  Inhaling and exhaling slowly through the nose increases mental clarity and calms the nervous system.

* Dance Break!  Put on your favourite song and just let loose for 3-5 minutes.  If the kids are around, they’ll love being your back up dancers!

* Find the funny!  Take a look at that silly e-mail your friend sent you or flip over to YouTube and watch that viral video of the talking monkeys you’ve been hearing about and have a laugh.  Laughing releases endorphins, which reduce stress and help us to feel lighter.  A great way to approach that next task!
