Clear Your Mind by Exercising Your Body

By Jessica Li

In North America, the average person spends 50 minutes (80 minutes for Torontonians) each workday – or over 100 hrs per year – sitting in cars or buses, commuting to work. And then another average of eight hours sitting at a desk. Bodies are energy, and being relatively static for most of the day creates a buildup of energy tension.

Transfer the bundled up stresses of the day into energy for your workouts. Releasing stress though physical activity helps clear the mind and reset it for the next day to help us refresh and be ready to take on new challenges.

Physical activity helps avoid groggy minds. Doing something active purges tensions that have accumulated throughout the day. Do a 45-minute gym workout if you choose, but there is nothing wrong with taking a 10-minute walk. The important thing is to chose an activity that you enjoy.

Here are some tips to sneak in more active time:

1. Park further from the door. It is amazing how many times a person can circle a parking lot in hopes of finding the perfect spot close to the door, while another person who parked further is already inside the mall.

2. Take a 15 minute walk after dinner. Fresh air is excellent for renewing. This is a great time to unwind, get active, and help avoid feeling heavy before bedtime. Bring along a loved one and vent out the day’s frustrations.

3. Make it social. Getting active sometimes calls for motivation. Sign up for yoga or spin classes, or join a sports team. Get exercise and meet new friends at the same time.

Remember the little ones! Kids need to release energy to avoid restlessness, especially on school days after sitting in a desk for much of the day. Include them in any physical activities for a happy, clear-minded, renewed day.
