Follow Your Heart…

By Lori Bateman

I’ve been hearing that phrase a lot lately or maybe it’s just my ears twitching every time I hear it because it speaks directly to me. I didn’t give it too much thought when I was younger because it was effortless…I just went in the direction of what I liked and felt good about.

Somewhere along life’s twisty roads, I fell into doing what I had to do rather than what I wanted, which looked a lot like survival. Some might argue that we are all here to survive, which we all do to some degree, but perhaps it’s the term, “surviving” that really doesn’t offer much hope.

When I hear “follow your heart” I also hear “it’s time to do what you want to be doing, not what you have to just to survive.” This speaks loudly to me because it is my spirit shouting!

Along the way, I’ve learned that while it is great to do what is needed even if it means survival, there comes a time when we can no longer operate on auto pilot. Our soul cries out for more, our body aches for fulfillment and our heart, the centre of our being, starts to close up like flowers wilting. The act of following your heart then becomes the key to survival.
